Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
