The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
