Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a prominent awards ceremony approaches, one notices an outcry to include additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
