This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard biological terror, but within Together lies a intense meditation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the country for her career. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters face the kind of problems that come with most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
