Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to question certain rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
